Meet the Team

Steve Bateman – Managing Director

Steve has been the backbone of Space-Build, since day one.

He is reflected in Space-Build’s core values. He started Space-Build in 1996 in a workshop, designing shop equipment and educational bespoke furniture. He then expanded over the years, with new contracts and new commercial customers arising in the student and hotel sectors. We have moved into bigger premises, 4 times over the last 27 years, resulting in our current facilities spread over 3 units.

Steve has a huge amount of knowledge of woodworking manufacturing. From school, he has always been around woodworking. He developed his skills to become a shop floor manager, thus resulting in a highly regarded production manager in 3 well-known furniture companies across Yorkshire. He is now enjoying his well-earned semi-retirement.

Steve has a passion for cars, music and Golf. He previously owned a custom-built AC Cobra, spending many happy hours at the wheel. He has enjoyed many cars over the years, including a Mini Cooper rally spec, for hill climbing. He also has a love for music, which stems from working on sound desks for a band in the 70s, to now enjoying live music concerts without the tweaking. He loves a round of golf too.

Adrian Bateman – Production Director

Adrian formally joined the company in July 2020 as a production manager. He has been involved in woodworking for over 20 years, gaining a vast amount of experience and knowledge. Starting out as an apprentice joiner at 19, to being a subcontractor for 8 years on many sites across the UK, to then taking the leap and starting his own company, he has now gone full circle, bringing his knowledge into our business.

Adrian is now managing the machinery and production of the business. As we have expanded our machinery, he has expanded his knowledge to be able to address any issues that may arise on the production line. His role has developed since 2020, starting off as the main CNC machine operator on a brand new Biesse Rover A, to running the production line since our foreman retired, to be a part of the new senior team.

He has been a part of Space-Builds growth since his early 20s, learning all aspects of the machinery from operating each one, to maintaining them. This knowledge is now used in his current role.

Adrian has a passion for classic cars. He has rebuilt his MK1 VW Golf, which he has owned for over 15 years, from scratch. He also has a love for music and has played the drums in 2 bands, for the last 10 years.

India Edwards – Operations Director

India formally joined the company in April 2020 as finance manager. With her experience on the shop floor and gaining knowledge of the financial world through previous employment and AAT studies, she has become the foundation of the financial, HR, operations and commercial aspects of the business.

Her hard work has paid off throughout her career, starting off as an account assistant at 18, to a financial and management accountant at 22, reporting to the FD, becoming a Finance manager and then her own Director of a successful business at 25.

India also has knowledge of the machines on the shop floor and can operate them when needed. She has been a part of Space-Builds growth since a teenager, helping in any aspect she could.

India has a passion for interior design and outdoor pursuits. If she’s not redecorating her house, or creating another Pinterest board, she’s on the moors or in a woodland with her working dogs. She has 4 dogs to keep her busy, training them for the working season. October is the best month of the year!
